The Huskies beat 16-seed UTSA 90-52 in the Round of 64, and then beat 9-seed Syracuse 98-45 in the Round of 32. In short, it’s been smooth sailing. Now, ahead of their Sweet 16 matchup with North Carolina, UConn is a 27.5-point favorite and -100000 on the moneyline. Again — can anyone challenge the Huskies? Familiar Faces: At third and fourth on this list are Texas and South Carolina, respectively. In the first round, Texas beat 16-seed Missouri State 87-45, and then beat 8-seed Oregon 100-58 in the second round. South Carolina has arguably been the most-dominant team in the Tournament, beating 16-seed Southern 103-34 in Round 1 and defeating 9-seed USC 101-61 in Round 2.

Nebraska Went From Laughingstock to March Madness Darling And Sweet 16 squad

Fred Hoiberg carried the nickname “The Mayor” during his playing days at Iowa State, a reflection of his popularity in Ames, Iowa. With the following he’s gained as Nebraska’s head basketball coach, perhaps “Governor” would be fitting. And if he leads the Cornhuskers past rival Iowa in the Sweet 16, any election might be a landslide. Hoiberg has lifted the Cornhuskers (28-6) from laughingstock to March Madness darling. The Cornhuskers were a combined 14-45 his first two seasons after he took over in 2019. Heading into this season, Nebraska, which had never won an NCAA Tournament game, was picked to finish 14th in the 18-team Big Ten Conference. Instead, the Cornhuskers won their first 20 games and jumped into the top five of The Associated Press poll. They earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and a horde of Nebraska fans traveled to Oklahoma City to watch the program take over the Paycom Center and claim its first two March Madness victories — a blowout against Troy and a thriller against Vanderbilt. Hoiberg said his players deserve the credit heading into the South Region matchup with Iowa (23-12) on Thursday in Houston. “They’ve just done all the little things really well, and to me, it makes our job as coaches a lot easier when you have a group that does all those things,” he said. “They hold each other accountable. We’ve got great leadership with this group — as good as any that I’ve coached.” Hoiberg said the seeds for this year’s success were planted last season at the College Basketball Crown tournament. The Cornhuskers won four games to claim the championship at that event, making success a part of their identity. [College Basketball Crown: Guide to All 8 Teams in the 2026 Postseason Tourney] “You don’t get a chance to cut down nets very often, so for us, it was a really cool and special event,” he said. “Again, the guys that got the opportunity to play that are helping us this year in a huge way — that was as important as anything.” The success has carried over to this season. Troy coach Scott Cross was impressed after Nebraska defeated his team 76-47 last week. “Nebraska is one of the best teams,” he said. “I’ve been doing this since 1998. They’re really, really freaking good. The way they shoot the basketball and the way they defend, watching it on video, you’re like, man, there’s no openings as you watch it on video.” Hoiberg has been able to enjoy the run with his son Sam as the point guard. Sam Hoiberg averages 9.4 points on 54.5% shooting and has 151 assists to just 37 turnovers. Sam’s twin brother, Charlie, is a graduate team manager. “To be able to share that moment with these guys — you get so caught up in the coaching part of it that you really don’t think about it, but when that game was over and all the emotions were flooding out, to be able to share that with those two guys has been great,” Fred Hoiberg said. It’s not all grit and precision — there’s talent, too. [College Basketball Crown: 4 Takeaways From the Crown Bracket Reveal] The Cornhuskers picked up a star in Pryce Sandfort, who played for Iowa last season before transferring. He leads the team with 17.9 points per game. Rienk Mast, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound big man from the Netherlands, has been a stabilizer. The senior is averaging 13.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. Braden Frager, a freshman from Lincoln, Nebraska, who hit the dramatic game-winning layup against Vanderbilt, averages 11.7 points as a reserve. Guard Jamarques Lawrence started his career at Nebraska, then played a season at Rhode Island for a season before returning to the Huskers. He averaged 9.8 points and 3.9 assists this season. Berke Buyuktuncel, a physical 6-10 forward from Turkey, has started every game. Fred Hoiberg said each player’s ability to find his lane has been key to the team’s success. “We all have our styles,” he said. “We all have our personalities. I think you’ve got to be who you are. These players are smart, and we have to be who we are. We can’t be frauds. It’s just kind of who I am and who I’ve always been.” Reporting by The Associated Press.

Steelers HC Mike McCarthy: Reuniting With Aaron Rodgers ‘Would Be Great Story’

Mike McCarthy and the Pittsburgh Steelers need a quarterback, and the team’s new head coach reuniting with his former signal-caller, Aaron Rodgers, might be their most viable option for the 2026 season. Does that possibility interest McCarthy? “It would be a great story,” McCarthy said about the Steelers potentially re-signing Rodgers at a tribute event for former Green Bay Packers executive Bob Harlan on Monday, according to ESPN. “I don’t know — and I would love to tell everybody about breaking news, but it’s really cool to see Aaron at [age] 42. To see a young man at 22 and all of what he’s been able to accomplish and where he’s at in his personal life and trying to make this decision. I think he’s in a really good place.” McCarthy, who was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach under Ray Rhodes in 1999, took over as Green Bay’s head coach for the 2006 season, which was Rodgers’ second season in the sport with him backing up Hall of Famer Brett Favre. Ironically, in Rodgers’ third season as Green Bay’s full-time quarterback (2010), the Packers won Super Bowl XLV against head coach Mike Tomlin — McCarthy’s successor in Pittsburgh — and the Steelers. The Packers made the playoffs in nine of McCarthy’s 13 seasons as head coach, eight of those seasons coming with Rodgers under center. Green Bay went a combined 125-77-2 in the regular season and 10-8 in the postseason under McCarthy from 2006-18. Meanwhile, Rodgers won two of his four NFL MVPs with McCarthy as his head coach (2011 and 2014). After a year off (2019), McCarthy became the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, with the team going a combined 49-35 in the regular season and 1-3 in the postseason under him from 2020-24. He then didn’t coach in 2025 and was named Pittsburgh’s head coach this past January, following Tomlin stepping down. In all, McCarthy is 15th in NFL history with 174 regular-season wins as a head coach and tied for 11th with 11 postseason wins. As for Rodgers, the 42-year-old quarterback totaled 3,322 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.8 passer rating across 16 regular-season starts for the Steelers last year, while completing 65.7% of his passes. Pittsburgh, which won the AFC North at 10-7, later lost at home to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round. If Rodgers retires or the Steelers seek a new quarterback altogether, veterans Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson and Jimmy Garoppolo are free agents. The Steelers currently have Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard in their quarterback room. Pittsburgh also has five picks in the first 100 selections of the 2026 NFL Draft: 21, 53, 76, 85 and 99.
